The Lisa&Jake made its first run this week. The new heat/AC unit provided a very comfortable wheel house temp for those who chose to stay in the cabin. If the A/C works as good I am sure to have a lot of company in the summer. The new gelcoat job on the boat’s exterior has not suffered any slamming weights yet – I am sure this will be short lived! New Transmission and a new wheel gave the boat a nice smooth, quiet ride to and from the fishing grounds.

Out on the Haddock grounds where we went were fish plentiful for the clam dunkers. Capt Rob will be piloting the Kayman Too again this year – he has been putting anglers on some great Haddock so far this spring! On off days Rob and Beard have been fabricating some custom items for the boat to keep things neat and accessible.

Stellwagon Bluefin Tuna

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

The Stellwagon Tuna bite is red hot!

The Bait on Northern Stellwagon is mainly Sandeels and Lures like our Custom Slug-Go Spreader Bars and Custom Rigged Single Slug-Gos  and Daisy Chains have been the ticket (troll these rigs slow!!) Our customers are also reporting many fish holding 50-75′ down and Butterfly Jigs and Braid Jigs are the weapon of chioce for these stubborn fish!

There are tons of Pogies down around the Southwest Corner of Stellwagon and on the Backside of the Cape towards Peaked Hill Bar. The best way to fish this bait is live. You should either slow troll them or fish them off a Kite.

If you can’t net some live bait, lures such as the Braid Lil Speedys are doing a great job mimicking this great bait. Also producing great numbers of fish is our Custom Black Magic Spreader Bar!

For more reports give us a call at the store at 978-281-0858

Good Luck and Tight Lines!

Black Rose Charters Fishing Report

black-rose-cod-1

This past week, Stellwagen Bank has been flush with cod.  Up until last week, we’ve been getting great numbers of cod and haddock at the SWC, right on the western edge.  It didn’t matter much about where you started; some of the drifts were a mile long.  As it often happens, though, that didn’t last.  It became more and more important to watch your fish finder and mark a solid school of fish on the bottom, plotting that spot with your chartplotter.  Find the school, mark it, and precisely drop your baits on that school.  Hook up, reel up, then redrift over that school again and try to stay on it as it moves around.  Leaving the SWC, we made our way up the western edge, marking schools, catching them, and moving on.  Reading my reports and notes from past years, the end of May was incredible on the northern part of the bank.  So…I’ve been there every day since Friday with tremendous success.

What we’re finding is that the fish are active in the morning..early.  Then the bite dies down and you really have to be precise about your drifts.. Or…you relax and drift, catching what you may until the bite picks back up in the late morning.  I suspect that the fish are full all morning, then go on the feed again a few hours later.  That next bite has been one for the ages.  Just drop and catch.  We’re not using bait, but rather a 7oz Jig and a rubber shad teaser a foot above the jig.  We’re finding that gold is a better color for the jig in the morning, while silver is better later in the day.  Bright pink teasers have been better, with long white teasers coming in second.

A huge school of stripers has moved onto Stellwagen Bank and that got me excited yesterday as I saw birds working as if they were over tuna.  We had our tuna spinning gear on board in case and it was ready in an instant as we sneaked out of the fleet to the working birds.  But…it was stripers.  Tuna will be here any day now; check out my site for daily reports.  We’ve got some great fishing ahead of us this year with a banner cod and haddock season under way and promise of some big fish to come!

As you probably know, mackerel are in right now with a huge school of fish off of Green Harbor in 30-60′ of water, with loads of cod underneath them.  Always keep a livie in the water away from the boat when catching mackerel to get any hungry stripers that are going to be shadowing those mackerel schools. Why not?  See you out there…

May 24th aboard Tuna.com

Monday, May 25th, 2009

tunacom-cod-41May 24th, Out of Gloucester- Stellwagon Bank

Today we had to go with quick short drifts again because the cod were in tight piles. Every time you would get on them all 5 rods were lap over with singles hook-ups and lots of doubles (if you were patient enough to wait another second before cranking.)

Fish were biting mostly on jigs and teasers. All fish were market size with a bunch of larges mixed in, with some up to about 20lbs. It was nonstop action every time the guys would drop, but as soon as you were off them it was time to move. No time to sit down as the move sometimes was only a boat length before it was time to send the jigs down again!

May 22nd aboard Tuna.com

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009
tunacom-cod-31May 22th, Cod and Haddock

Today we had out Jay and crew and we were back on the meat! Great weather and great fishing, but with short drifts on piles of cod. All rods down and all 5 would lap over almost each time we stopped and then it would be time to move again. Some drifts were longer than others with a few more to be picked if we continued the drift, but moving and getting right back on them was almost a sure thing that you would get 5 on again.

By noon time we went looking for haddock we were all done with the cod. The haddock bite never did shape up today with only a few in the cooler.

All in all they went home with bags stuffed full of nice size cod fillets.

Heading back out in the morning for hopefully another repeat day…

Tuna.com Fishing Report

May 17th Cod and Haddock

Today we got a later start than usual, leaving the dock around 7 AM.  We had 4 persons with 2 coming from France for their first visit to the states.  It was a great day with plenty of cod jigging in the morning and then the winds came on strong and it was all over.  The cod once again were not as big as last week but keepers anyway.Day on the Bank

We then took a short ride to look for haddock, threw the anchor and in about 15 minutes time it was nonstop haddock.  Drop and reel fishing once again with lots bull haddock.  If you had one on and waited another second you would have a double.  The coolers filled up in no time and it was another early ride home with tired customers and coolers full of fillets.

April 29th, 2009 Tuna.com Cod/Haddock Report

Friday, May 1st, 2009

4-29-09

Today we had out Big Al from the Sea Horse and other crewmembers from Atlanitc Highlands. Fishing was so good today and it was not as good as it has been, that they decided to come again tomorrow.

It was a bit windy this morning when we left and I knew we were not going to be able to jig until later in the day when the winds were going to back off. So we anchored and had a pretty good pick of cod and haddock for a few hours, filling about 3 coolers of fish.

As soon as the winds let off we pulled the anchor and found the cod. All I will say it was drop and reel fishing and as quick as you hit the bottom you where on! If everyone went down at one time there where 5 bent rods. You never came up with an empty jig unless of course you were Al. Fish were all over the deck with all coolers full and they just kept coming.

We left the fish biting and will be back in the morning to hopefully do the same.

Pictures to follow tomorrow when we get back in or check out our website on the fishing reports section.

Fishing has been awesome this year and there is plenty of bait around and it should continue.

Spring Cod Fishing on Tuna Hunter

Monday, April 27th, 2009

We at Tuna Hunter wait all winter for spring days on the water like this past weekend. Bright sun, light breezes, great fishing yielding clean cod and bountiful haddock.  Some feel Gloucester cod & haddock fishing is best in the spring, when there is less commercial pressure on the fishing grounds and all-round fewer boats on the water.

Our Stellwagon Bank spots are producing a mix of clean cod, up to 22 lbs, and haddock averaging 22 inches.  Both species are hitting on both jigs and clams, depending on the particular spot and tide.  Spring tides called for the heavier jigs for the bulk of the day on Saturday.  The action was fairly steady throughout the charters, as we moved from one spot to another as the bite at one area slowed down to keep all anglers busy.

This is the time to fill your freezer, taking advantage of those gorgeous spring days out on the water.  Call us for the latest openings at 978-407-1371, or email captain@tunahunter.com. That next 20-lb-er has your name on it!

Good fishing to you!
