Kayman Charters 4-26-2009

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Outside of Gloucester to Stellwagon Bank is just what they call it “A
Marine Sanctuary”! Herring, Sand eels, Whales Dolphins..tons of Cod
and Haddock!

Not only are Cod caught on the jigs Large Haddock are attacking jigs
and feather teasers.
Bait setups are still the main feed of the Haddock but the jig guys
are also getting there fill.

Shoal Spots with the hard bottom are holding 10-15 lb Cod that are
gorging on herring..jigs are the key in these spots.
The fish finder is lite up from Gloucester to Middle Bank and promises
of a great season as the water has warmed 5 degrees in the last 2
days.

The Westchester Connection aboard Tuna Hunter Fishing Charters

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Gloucester cod fishing charter - Tuna Hunter
The Westchester Connection on a day of Gloucester Cod Fishing - Tuna Hunter Fishing Charters

On Saturday, the early morning drift yielded some cod, this got everyone warmed up.  The real action started when Captain Gary Cannell chose to anchor over several hot spots.   Fish on!  for continuous action for the remainder of the day, given short breaks for laughs and lunch.  Cod to 20lbs hit Norwegian jigs, aiming for herring, but hitting the hook and landing aboard Tuna Hunter.   Haddock – boatloads of haddock – preferred the clams throughout this weekend.  Saturday’s haddock bite was steadier and continued later in the day.  The Westchester guys were fishing all day long, reeling all day long, which is what we all aim for.

Typical to all trips in the spring, the breezes offshore and 45 degree water keep it much cooler on the Bank than the 80′s on shore.  Bring sweaters, hats, windbreakers, and strong arms.  As the water warms up, expect migrating striped bass and eventually bluefin tuna to move into our area.

There is plenty of life out on both Jeffries Ledge and Stellwagen Bank:  sand eels, herring, pods of whales.  It all looks promising to attract and hold quality fish throughout our summer season.

Friday’s fishing was “ridiculous”, with limits of cod being reached by mid-morning.  (current NMFS regulations call for 10 cod per angler; no bag limit on haddock).    Anglers were happy to focus on tasty haddock for the remainder of the day.

TUNA.COM Cod and Haddock

Friday April 24th

We left the dock at 6am and headed to where we have been fishing and along the way, about 7 miles short of the cod grounds, fish where piled up high.

Fishing was the best it’s been all year!. We made one long drift and we had our limit of cod in about 2 hours time. A new body of fish is here, still with some throwbacks and most you did not even have to measure, they were mostly gaffers. Still nothing that big, but bigger than they have been.

We had to get away from the cod and look for haddock and did not have to go too far. We moved to the deeper water, set the anchor and put the bait out. All I can say it was nonstop big haddock with not one throwback and plenty of cod again that got to swim another day.

Around noon or so everyone was tired and it was time to take a slow ride home and fillet fish.

Heading back out in the morning for hopefully a repeat trip.

Cod and Haddock Report on Stellwagon Bank

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Our last two cod and haddock charters on 4-17 and 4-18 were a great success. Two great days with sore arms and full coolers. There is plenty of bait and fishing should continue to be good.

Fridays charter 4-17, which only consisted of only 3 fishermen caught 70 plus cod and haddock. It was a slow cod pick in the morning with the largest fish around 12 pounds and the rest where in the 5 – 8 pound range. There where also quite a few throwbacks, one out of every four or so was not a keeper. In the late morning we went looking for haddock in the deeper water and marked quite a few, shortly thereafter we set the anchor and it was almost non-stop action with all keeper haddock and some where around 10 plus pounds.

Saturdays charter 4-18, was and even better day! We caught around 120 cod and haddock and it was much the same as the day before, cod in the morning and then to the haddock grounds after wards. Once we set the anchor, as soon as everyone was on the bottom all rods were bent and it lasted for quite a while and when it did slow down after the tide change we still always had fish on. 100 pounds of fish fillets in the cooler and we where on our way home.

Well will be fishing 4 more days this week and will report back to you in a few days.

Talk to you soon.
